Advance registration for this event has now closed. Late registration will open at 3:30 p.m. at the Chamber.
Join the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Nashville Downtown Partnership for an Issues Insights program to learn more about Nashville’s process to create a downtown signage code and the need for business input. Representatives from Tolleson-McCoy, a local environmental graphic design consultant for the process, will lead discussion about the proposed code and solicit input about existing conditions and regulations regarding signage as an initial part of the planning process. Metro Planning Department staff will also be available to answer questions.
In 2009, the Chamber and the Partnership formed a joint task force to look at Nashville’s proposed Downtown Code (DTC). One of its recommendations was that the signage portion of the Code be studied separately, which is now being implemented by the Metro Planning Department.
According to the Metropolitan Planning Department, downtown has unique planning challenges: a diversity of development sites and the historic status of a large portion of the downtown area. A comprehensive study of downtown would aid in crafting signage that contributes to the different downtown code subdistricts’ aesthetics as well as the economic viability of business. Business input is needed for this important study.
The timeline for the process: Input is being gathered from downtown stakeholders in February and March. On April 27 and 28, the consultants will conduct a work session at the Civic Design Center that will be open to the public. Initial suggestions to the Metro Planning Commission will be made at the end of April. Lead consultant Code Studio from Austin will then take the feedback and work to craft a draft signage code for community assessment that should be addressed this fall by the MPC.
