TEMPORARY CONTEMPORARY GALLERY
IONA BROWN
April 14 – July 8

In her work, the artist adapts the Japanese tradition of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints to contemporary art. Ukiyo-e prints were popular in Japan for their images of ephemeral entertainment such as fashion, popular actors and musicians, and famous geishas. Brown has adapted the formal style to comment on the effects of cross-cultural currents. She focuses on the appropriation of mainstream hip-hop culture by suburban American and urban Japanese youth. Her subjects dawn hip-hop apparel, are clad in flashy jewelry, and appear in “black-face” make-up. As a result, her work questions the effects of culture imitation.

IN THE GARDENS
MATERIAL TERRAIN
March 17 - June 17

Enormous sculptures, composed of surprising materials such as poured fiberglass, polyethelene, aluminum chain-link steel and even wheat grass, will fill the Museum and also be sited in the surrounding gardens. Artists featured in Material Terrain use diverse materials and techniques to address intersections between the natural and the constructed environments. Featured projects explore human associations with the natural terrain to reveal the fantasy of nature as a place of retreat and wonder.
