Keynote speaker: Dr. Ron Goetzel, vice president, consulting and applied research, Truven Health Analytics; director, Institute for Health and Productivity Studies at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health

The theme of the 2016 Chamber Annual Meeting will be A Bold Vision and will focus on the steps we need to take now to create the kind of region we want in the coming decades.

In 2015, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Baptist Healing Trust, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Community Health Systems, the HCA Foundation, the Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Nashville Health Care Council, the Saint Thomas Health Foundation and Vanderbilt University to publish a groundbreaking study of population health in the Nashville MSA. The report, called  Assessment of Nashville Region Health, Cost, Access and Quality, was the first to use actual health insurance claims to get a clearer picture of the health challenges we face and how our community compares with peer cities.

The study found that while health care is generally accessible and affordable in Middle Tennessee, much of the care is focused on treating chronic diseases like obesity, heart disease, diabetes and COPD, all illnesses impacted by lifestyle choices like diet, exercise and tobacco use. The widespread prevalence of these illnesses makes Nashville less competitive when compared with many of the cities against whom it competes for new jobs and investment.

The research, however, suggests a broad collaboration between business and health care providers can have a profound impact on both population health and worker productivity.

In his keynote presentation, Goetzel will address how that collaboration can work and how it impacts your company’s bottom line. He’ll also speak about the ways Nashville may be placing itself at a competitive disadvantage by ignoring worker health.

We are also proud to present the 2016 Spirit of the Chamber awards to:
