Event Description: Saturday, April 13 marks the opening of Faith Family Medical Clinic’s 1,700-square foot community garden, engineered to enhance the nutritional and wellness program Journey to Health being offered to Middle Tennessee’s working uninsured. Patients, staff and volunteers will complete the major installation by local landscaping company Gardens of Babylon, by planting the remaining vegetables, edible plants and berries that will yield fresh food throughout the year. The project materials, labor and plantings are valued at $9,000 — half of which was donated by the landscaping company. Additional funding for the garden was provided by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee, The State of Tennessee, and the Garden Club of Nashville. The Clinic plans to use the garden for educational classes (including teaching kitchens) aimed at improving nutrition among patients. Edible features will include four blueberry bushes, five raspberry bushes, a sunflower patch, perennial strawberries, tomatoes and numerous vegetables. Unique features will include two 4’ x 8’ wheelchair accessible raised planters with seating, a compost bin, numerous raised planters, trellises for climbing vegetables and fruits, an additional seating area, and a garden chalkboard to list daily activities and needed garden tasks.
