Creating a healthy and resilient city demands that we create healthy and resilient neighborhoods. We need caretakers in every neighborhood striving to preserve and improve the place where they live. Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County needs a greater pool of citizens, reflecting the diversity of their communities, who are knowledgeable and skilled in neighborhood organizing.

Since 1997, Neighbor 2 Neighbor (N2N) has equipped residents and neighborhood organizations with the tools they need to create better neighborhoods. Founded and led by neighborhood leaders, N2N is laser-focused on helping to form and sustain neighborhood organizations in order for residents to create positive changes right where they live. We do this by providing the following three essential services:

NEIGHBORHOOD LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT TRAINING: We provide participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to become more actively engaged citizens and effective neighborhood leaders and organizers. Residents are able to participate in a range of leadership development programs such as, The Emerging Neighborhood Leadership Academy, Disaster Preparedness and Response Training, and Policy and Zoning 101. Instructional programming includes a minimum of 6 courses (3-12 hours each), 24 workshops and panel discussions, and over 44 facilitated dialogues and presentations. The in-person and virtual training sessions represent more than two hundred classroom hours each year.

NETWORKING EVENTS AND COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS: We bring together neighbors, partners, and other key stakeholders to build trust relationships and collaborative alliances. Participants are able to meet new people with similar neighborhood passions and interests, gain new perspectives, support one another, and work together on common issues. Some of our ongoing projects include the Davidson County Good Neighbor Day Festival, Neighborhood Passions Affinity Network, C4N Nashville, and the State of Metro Neighborhoods project.

CONSULTATION, FACILITATION, AND MEDIATION: We consult with neighborhood organizations on a wide range of issues including neighborhood safety; gentrification and affordable housing; diversity and inclusion; neighborhood preservation; disaster preparedness, response, and recovery; and, ensuring equity in government representation and services.  We assist residents in forming new, and restarting inactive, neighborhood organizations. We provide technical support for neighborhood organizations seeking to create association charters and bylaws, strategic plans, and neighborhood planning and development.

Last year, we worked with residents in over 161 neighborhoods across Davidson County. Our program participants tell us we are making a difference in their work in neighborhoods across the metropolitan area. We provide them with first-hand knowledge and materials to assist them in neighborhood organizing and leadership. We inspire and rejuvenate participants seeking to create positive change in their own neighborhoods. We increase the capacity of participants to perform leadership roles at the local neighborhood level and even beyond. And, we connect participants with other neighborhood leaders and community partners.

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) is a Nashville-based non-profit organization established by the historic Music Modernization Act of 2018 to serve as the exclusive administrator of a new blanket mechanical license to U.S.-based digital service providers (DSPs) for the use of musical works on their platforms. The MLC then collects and distributes the mechanical royalties due under those licenses to songwriters, composers, lyricists, music publishers, administrators and collective management organizations (CMOs). The MLC also built and maintains both a publicly accessible database of musical works that is free for anyone to use and The MLC Portal – where MLC Members register, maintain and update their catalogs of musical works data. Founded on four guiding principles – excellence, diversity, transparency and service – which are the driving force behind everything the organization does, The MLC is governed by a Board of Directors and advisory committees that are comprised of songwriters and music publishers. Their experience and input help shape The MLC’s overall work, which is carried out by a staff of approximately 50 individuals operating in 11 U.S. states as well as the United Kingdom. The MLC officially began administering the new blanket mechanical license to DSPs on January 1, 2021 and completed its first monthly mechanical royalty distribution to Members in April of 2021. By law, all of The MLC’s services are offered to its Members completely free of charge. Learn more at TheMLC.com.

Nearly 17% of Nashville residents live in poverty – more than the state or national average. The cost of living is also rising faster in Nashville than any other U.S. city right now, and even many people who have jobs can’t rise above the poverty line. This is a serious challenge for our city. UpRise is a program to help address these concerns. We provide a one-year program for Nashville adults who are unemployed or under-employed, and are ready to start a new career path to improve their financial condition. Each participant starts in a six-week training camp, followed by job skill training, and finally, job placement. We know that there is no sustained change without sustained relationship, and everyone needs encouragement and support. We provide each of our students with a mentor, or “ally,” to walk with them throughout their journey. Our hope is that through UpRise, participants will find meaningful employment at a living wage with career advancement opportunities. We aim for our graduates to make $14 or more per hour, leading to upward mobility and a thriving vocational life. We are actively recruiting students for our classes now. We are also looking for business owners in our community who want to make their workplace their mission field, and who would be willing to hire one of our graduates. You can learn more about these opportunities at www.uprisenashville.org. Or, call Carole Peterson or Jennifer Mobley at 615-301-8440.

FLC’s immersive Weekday Program and individualized coaching sessions meet Friends where they are to help them pursue personal and vocational goals step by step so that they can live out their greatest potential. On our campus and throughout the community, FLC’s holistic life skills, service learning, and artistic programs are customized for each Friend — maximizing hands-on experience, creativity, and purposeful learning. Additionally, Friends can put their creative and entrepreneurial talents to the test working, playing, and having fun.

A sense of belonging and personal fulfillment come together in a safe environment where every Friend is physically and emotionally secure — giving them the dignity they deserve as they pursue their dreams.

At The Branch, we strive to build a community where everyone can thrive by nourishing, educating, and equipping our neighbors.

We know that people flourish in community, but our society is fractured by social, financial, religious, political, and ethnic division. These differences can make finding a real community difficult. We are working together to form the bonds of friendship, so that everyone at The Branch has a voice, acceptance, and welcome. By creating such a community, we strive to give people what they need to thrive spiritually, emotionally, and materially. The beginning of relationship building is meeting the physical need for food and offering English Language Learning instruction for adults.
